Windows was first released independently in November 20, 1985. At first Windows as ver. 1.0 lacked popularity, as it wasn't very well user friendly. Version 2 came out on December 9, 1987 it was proved slightly more popular than it's predecessor. It wasn't until the version 3.0 released when it became a success. 3.0 was later released with multimedia extensions that allowed it to use later MMX technology. When Windows 3.1/NT released it introduced a new filesystem for hard drives, NTFS, was more powerful than its FAT32 sibling, which allows it to be faster and more secure. In fact NTFS is used on current day Microsoft operating systems. Windows 95, codenamed Chicago, was introduced for 32-bit architecture, allowing a more powerful computer with larger amounts of RAM. Windows 98 was an improved version of 95, which allowed 2GB partitions. After that followed Windows 2000/ME/XP/Vista which are the newer versions of Windows that some people still use today.
